Mathematics:
Mathematics plays an important role in children’s everyday learning and development, helping them to make sense of the world around them and build confidence in problem-solving and reasoning. Through practical experiences, play-based activities and adult support, children gradually develop their understanding of numbers, patterns, shapes, measures and mathematical language.
Children are encouraged to develop a secure understanding of numbers through counting, recognising numerals, comparing quantities and exploring simple calculations through meaningful activities and games. Daily opportunities to sing number rhymes, use manipulatives, solve problems and engage in mathematical discussions help children build confidence and fluency in early maths skills.
Mathematical development also includes exploring shape, space and measure. Through activities such as construction, puzzles, sorting, matching and outdoor play, children learn to recognise patterns, describe shapes, compare sizes and develop spatial awareness. Adults support children by modelling mathematical vocabulary and encouraging them to explain their thinking and reasoning.
Developing strong early mathematical skills helps children to become confident learners who can apply their understanding in a range of real-life situations. Repeated opportunities to explore, investigate and practise mathematical concepts through play and everyday experiences help children build independence, resilience and a positive attitude towards maths.
