Understanding the world

Understanding the World:

Understanding the World helps children make sense of their physical environment and the community around them. Through a wide range of meaningful experiences and adult support, children develop their knowledge, curiosity and understanding of the world in which they live.

Children’s personal experiences play an important role in developing their understanding. Opportunities such as visits to parks, farms, theatres and interactive learning experiences such as Imagine That help children explore the wider world and make connections through first-hand experiences.

In the classroom, children are encouraged to explore and investigate the natural world through exciting hands-on experiences, including observing the life cycles of chicks and butterflies through hatching experiences. These opportunities help children develop curiosity, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of growth, change and living things.

Listening to a wide range of stories, non-fiction texts, rhymes and poems further supports children’s understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world. These experiences not only build important knowledge but also extend children’s vocabulary and language skills, supporting communication and later reading comprehension.
