The team at science website, Empiribox, has been very busy creating Empiribox @ Home, an online platform with a vast library of KS1 and KS2 curriculum-aligned home-school practical science lessons.  

 

What's included:

At the moment, there are only KS2 learning resources, however Early Years and KS1 resources will hopefully be available soon. 

 

Each of the links below will take you to different topics across the KS2 Science Curriculum. Enjoy :)

  • Matter: Solids, liquids and gases In this lesson we will learn that any matter can be classified as a solid, a liquid or a gas. We’ll also learn that the structure of the atoms in each of the three states of matter, makes them all behave differently. We’ll also learn matter can change from one state to another.
  • Materials: Thermal conductors In this lesson we will learn how materials are thermal conductors or insulators. We will look at what makes them a good conductor and a good insulator.
  • Plants: Parts of a plant In this lesson we will learn about the variety of plants, about plant parts and their functions and what factors help them to grow or stop them growing at all.
  • Sound: Investigating sound In this lesson we will learn that sound is made when an object vibrates, and that this sound is carried by particles. How dense the particles are in the objects next to the sound source will determine how far that sound travels.
  • Forces: Introduction to forces In this lesson we will learn that forces are acting all the time, even when an object does not move. We will identify different types of forces, how they act on an object and that forces are represented by force arrows which show both the direction the force acts in and the size of the force.
  • Changes: Temperature and chemical reactions In this lesson we are going to look at what happens when we mix substances together. Some changes are physical (reversible) and some are chemical (irreversible). When a chemical change happens, you can never get the substances back to what they were and you might see a change in temperature. You are going to learn that Exothermic reactions release heat (get warmer) and endothermic reactions take in heat (get cooler).
  • Earth, Light and Space: Our Solar System In this lesson we are going to look at our wonderful solar system. We will look at the planets and the order they appear as you travel away from the sun. We will investigate how the distance from the sun affects the temperature on the different planets.
  • Living Things and Evolution: Our earth In this lesson we will learn about our changing Earth, how the changes to the environment lead to changes in living things, and natural events which cause these changes. We will look at the different layers of the Earth and how features like volcanoes are formed.
  • Rocks: Introduction to rocks In this lesson we are going to learn about the different types of rock. We will investigate what is a rock, how it is affected by its environment and how the three types of rock are made.
  • Animals: Bones In this lesson we are going to look at the skeletons of animals including humans. What do they have in common? What are bones made from?
  • Electricity: Static electricity In this lesson we will learn that static electricity was discovered before current electricity. We will learn that it is a non-contact force caused by charged objects, which can attract or repel each other.
